My sister wanted to surprise her friend-colleague for her birthday. We've been talking about it since last year, I think. I'm quite please with how the figurine turned out. Love the hair. Her boobs size were..ahem.. of course purposedly exaggerated.

Gumpaste figurine is so not my specialty, but sometimes I like a good challenge ;) And what a challenge it was! 1 week's notice for the figurines! And 3 of them at that!

I always love making an all-white cake. Love the classic look of the finished cake. This cake is done for my neighbour, Juju. Juju does dulang hantaran decor as a hobby-part time business. Kinda like what I'm doing with Sugar High Bakers. It's a paying hobby. ;)

I didn't know the existence of Dibo the Gift Dragon until Masha requested for a Dibo cake for her girl, Umairah's 3rd birthday. My initial response was, "Dibo, amenda tu?" A check with my friend Rose confirmed that there was indeed a children's TV show with Dibo on it. Haha. So jakun!

Umairah loves Barney too, so I gathered the whole gang and printed the edible image for be put on top of the chocolate fudge cake covered with chocolate ganache. Colourful fondant stars are scattered around for the boom effect.

Digging up my old collection of cake photos, I came across this one - one I made in the "Cartoon Character Cake" class over at Bake With Yen. I was an amature in the class, everybodyelse has had somekind of a background in cake decorating. This was way back in May 2008, when I knew nothing about buttercream, and icings, or even baking 101! Before Wilton ;)

I would be the first to admit that I'm not one of those natural born baker. I'm the kind who will always screw up the recipe, the one who is stubborn enough to try a recipe a few times more, before throwing the bad recipes in the bin. The one who will try many, many recipes unil she finds a good one! I just pity my sisters who had to eat the experiments, especially those chocolate based ones. Bleargh!

In this class we learnt how to draw a cartoon character so they won't look distorted, or in plain Malay ~ cacat! Can you guess which cartoon character this is?

Azura was throwing a Ben10 themed party for her boy, Ryan. So she commissioned me for the cake, and Rose of Mammamea Icings for the cupcakes. The cake was Lime Cheesecake with Poppy Seeds, covered with grey tinted fondant and topped with a Ben10 fan gumpaste figurine.

Linda wanted a garden-themed cake to go with this ultra adorable clothes-line she made, for her baby shower. So I suggested we do a grass covered cake, with little flowers and butterflies scattered around. On the cake sides are baby-themed motifs - pink strollers, pink rattles, pink milk bottles, rubber duckies... guess what the gender of the baby is? :p

For the love of baking

I have a confession to make - I don't eat chocolate. And to say that I don't like the taste of it, is an understatement. But for the love of baking, I have learnt to control my sense of smell while baking this yummy (I've been told) Chocolate Fudge Cake with walnuts. Now, I actually love baking anything chocolate. This cake mix has taken many form, in its original form like in this photo, cupcakes, birthday cakes, and also kek hantaran.

Just a small surprise for my little cousin Cham (OK, OK, not so little anymore - he's 26 and 6' tall) for his engagement recently. 5" fruitcake covered in pink fondant and decorated with gumpaste flowers placed on a quirky pink ceramic platter.

This is the cake my best friend, Rose of Mammamea Icings produced when she wanted to learn to make fondant cakes. Don't you just love the minimalist look and the Calla Lilies? I'm just so proud of her, and her works now. At the back were the minicakes we made together during our R&D session at my workshop.

This cake is only 5" in diameter, and 8" in height. The top is fully covered with handcrafted flowers to match with the overall pink and green theme of the dulang hantaran. White roses dusted with edible pink glitter powder, pink hydrangeas and green apple blossoms make a good combination for this floral edible bouquet.

This is the cake that started it all, my first attempt at anything fondant. I got my first taste of handling fondant at Bake With Yen, Puchong. I was curious, so in April 2008, I signed up for a class with Chef Asma. Needless to say, I was intrigued. And I never looked back since.

The bride wanted an all white cake. All white doesn't necessarily mean plain and and boring. This cake was covered with Lily of the Valley made out of fondants and decorated with royal icing for veins and leaves. The cake top was further decorated with a floral arch and a birdbath - for a pair of silver lovebirds.

Looks like some serious updates need to be done! Sorry for the long hiatus...

This cake was done yesterday. I received a frantic call for help from my friend, Linda at 4.30pm. The intended cake maker pulled out at 4pm, and the wedding was less than 24hours away. I KNOW! So not funny, right?

Lucky I was in town, and lucky I was free yesterday night!

The happy ending, was, the cake was done, and ready to be picked up at 11.30pm the same night!

Rush Hour

A dear old friend, Ita, whom I haven't seen since probably 15 years ago (yikes!) called to ask if I was able to do 1 hantaran cake + 10 minicakes for her brother's big day. "Sure!" I said, more than happy to help out an old friend, eventhough I was only given a week's notice. Eeeeeps!

The theme for the hantaran cake was black and white - a quite popular colour combo nowadays, maybe Maya Karin's wedding reception had a lot to do with this trend :). And the minicakes, the ever popular blue and white. She gave me a brief on the hantaran cake, but with the minicakes - she totally left it up to me - just a simple one would do.

So here they are, my latest babies;

Happy CNY everyone! Been quite busy for a bit, as I've been busy travelling, and working.. ladida. Anyway, the oven's going to be fired up soon - last minute order from old classmate, Ita. 1 hantaran cake with black & white theme, and 10pcs of minicakes for VIPs with blue & white theme.. pick up will be on Thursday. Wish me luck!

14th Feb will be busy as well! 3 kek hantarans and 1 cupcake hantaran!

Pameran Pengantin 2009 Rocks!

2-4 Jan 2009 came, and went. OMG, what a fantastic time we had! Sugar High Bakers teamed up with friends - Arjuna Cipta si tukang pelamin, Sharm Captured si tukang gambar, and Sirron Galeria - pembuat kad jemputan kawin extraordinaire, and we had the time of our lives! :)

We were all first timers in the sense of expo. But for first timers and rookies in this wedding business, we did great (IMHO, of course!)..

Thank you all for coming to our booth! And thank you gang, me love you long time ;)

It's official then - Sugar High Bakers' day 1. To mark this special occassion, I finally finished this mother of all wedding cake! 3 tier 16", 12" and 8" in diameter. I will be showcasing this cake at the Pameran Pengantin 2009 - a wedding expo. The expo will be held 2-4 Jan 2009 at Ampang Point. Please come, all are welcome!

I like learning new stuff. With so many cool 3D cakes around, I can't help but enrol myself in a class to see what the fuss is about. I'm really, really proud with the outcome. And it was so much fun! Felt like I was back in kindergarten!

Raya Gifts

We were commissioned to produce 30 loaves of Kurma Cake for a customer who wanted to give them as raya gifts during the recent Aidilfitri. The cakes were baked in foil, and then wrapped up nicely. We do ad-hoc stuff too, if you ask nicely ;)

A single pink rose

Zairol requested this cake for his hantaran for his bride. Gladly obliged. The cake is 7" in diameter, 3" in height. Used gumpaste roses, with royal icing trimmings. Inside is fruitcake.

Our first baby

This is Sugar High Bakers' first ever cake sold - all white 7" in diameter, 6" in height for Izzah's hantaran. The cake was decorated with fondant and royal icing flowers with silver detailings. It weighed a hefty 3kgs (probably more!). This really is a labor of love!
